What is UnmeteredCable / UnmeteredDSL?

Back

UnmeteredCable is a coxiable cable based wholesale Internet service provider. UnmeteredCable uses DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 technology to transmit data over your local cable company's coxial network.

UnmeteredDSL is a digital subscriber line wholesale Internet service provider. UnmeteredDSL uses ADSL2+ or VDSL technology to transmit data over your local telephone network on copper pair.

UnmeteredCable and UnmeteredDSL do ALL service-related billing and maintenance dispatching to advertised specifications via ClientArea. Regional routing partners are official extensions of Internet Exchanges (AB/BC routing partner is an extension of the Vancouver Internet Exchange & Seattle Internet Exchange) giving exceptional latency and throughput to all regional destinations.

What are DOCSIS, ADSL2+ and VDSL?

These are line/communications languages used by connection hardware (aka modem) to communicate between the "Local Exchange" (as pictured above) and your location. DOCSIS is Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, ADSL is Asymmetric digital subscriber line and VDSL is very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line. Both ADSL2+ and VDSL use your telephone line for communications. DOCSIS uses your coxial cable line for communications and is maintained by your local cable TV operator to delivery to your location. UnmeteredCable packages up to and including 25Mbps uses the DOCSIS 2.0 communications protocol while everything after (30, 50, 60, 100 & 120Mbps) uses DOCSIS 3.0 ; UnmeteredDSL uses ADSL2+ (VPI/VCI: 0/33) for 6 & 15Mbps packages while 25Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps line speeds use VDSL2 ; UnmeteredDSL 50 & 100Mbps are also delivered over "bonded" circuits requiring two DSL paths and a respective "bonding modem". Please don't hestiate to confirm hardware compatibility with our toll free support line.

Where can I get Unmetered Cable or DSL service? How do I order?

UNMETERED provides internet connectivity services within Alberta and British Columbia with more provinces coming soon ; additionally, Unmetered delivers a broader portfolio of services designed for peoples around the world : we're focusing on service provisioning and management automation before adding additional connectivity regions. Please confirm service speed availability with the UNMETERED Service Availability Tool.

How fast is my Unmetered Internet?

UnmeteredDSL has six (6) residential internet speeds (available in multiples of those speeds with MLPPP; the maximum data transfer rates depend on your physical distance from the "Local Exchange" [as pictured above] ; UnmeteredCable does not have the same limitation : if coxial access is available and Unmetered has access to the city, we can provision at any of the available speeds) : 6Mbps, 15Mbps, 25Mbps and 50Mbps, 100Mbps. For business we provide 6Mbps, 15Mbps, 25Mbps and 100Mbps. Please enter your address into our availability tool to confirm access and speeds. Respective regional routing partners maintain network capacity availability between their network and the last mile carrier connecting your home : you are expected to have 100% of your line sync speed at all times ; if you don't, please open a support ticket or file a report via the Network Status or Announcements pages.

What is PPPoE? What is MLPPP? What is L2TP?

Point-to-point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a method of creating a direct "tunnel" across 3rd party ("Last Mile Carrier") networks to our regional routing partners : UnmeteredDSL requires the PPPoE tunnel to circumvent all typical "limits and modifications to data priority" and directly-connect to our private/enterprise/corporate network. Unlike DHCP which uses your hardware ("MAC") address to authenticate, PPPoE uses a username and password specific to your account. MultiLink PPP ("MLPPP") is technology UnmeteredDSL uses to "link mulitple" PPPoE sessions together into one larger logical link giving access to the combined capacity of all active "links". L2TP provides a comparable function as PPPoE but over regular IP packages and requires a server address to connect to : UnmeteredCable uses L2TP technology to provide the same unfiltered access PPPoE provides UnmeteredDSL.

What is a modem?

Really? If you're asking this : you probably should be on a regular ISP, not one designed for power users and developers. But incase you believe you're technically knowledgable to setup this device: it's the device which changes the cable / dsl copper service to an Ethernet (RJ-45) signal ; a mo-dem "modulates and demodules" the signal from the "Last Mile Carrier" to something your computer can use.

Can I buy my own ADSL/VDSL modem?

Yes. You may use any modem provided it is compatible with the respective "Last Mile Carrier" (as pictured above). The protocol used for your service package is defined during line ordering but please don't hesitate to contact support to confirm availability and compatibility of any prospective device. UNMETERED has an assortment of Cable and DSL modems available from the UnmeteredHardware WebStore.

How does DSL compare to cable?

UnmeteredDSL is a point to point service circuit loop between your location and the "Local Exchange" (as pictured above) while UnmeteredCable is split and shared within the each service area.

What operating systems does UNMETERED support?

Our network services are operating system independant : Unmetered provides a no-nonsense network connection ; Unmetered does not provide any device support beyond all required service configuration information being readily available via ClientArea.
